Nicolas Roy is a 24-year-old professional hockey player currenting playing center in the National Hockey League for the Vegas Golden Knights.  He was originally drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2015 NHL Draft.  He was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for center Erik Haula in June, 2019.

Prior to playing for the Vegas Golden Knights, Nic Roy found himself in the Hurricanes’ organization AHL team, the Charlotte Checkers, for most of the 2018-2019 season.  There, he helped lead his team to victory against the Chicago Wolves (the then-affiliated VGK minor league team) to win the Calder Cup Championship.   Roy totaled 17 goals and 19 assists in the regular season, on top of his 15 postseason points, proving to be quite a scoring threat at the forward position.

Born in Quebec, Canada in 1997, Nicolas Roy had a very remarkable junior hockey career prior to becoming the professional hockey player he is today.  At the 2013 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Draft, he was picked first overall by the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, but negotiated to have his rights traded to a Quebec-based team, and therefore began his junior hockey adventures with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens

Nicolas Roy's Early Success

Nicolas Roy has been a part of Team Canada frequently, boasting appearances in the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, the 2015 IIHF World U18 Championships and 2017 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships where he contributed to their silver medal win.

Leading up to the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Nic Roy was ranked 45th among skaters in North America by the National Hockey League Central Scouting Bureau.  He was chosen in the 4th round, 96th overall, by the Carolina Hurricanes.  After he returned to the QMJHL for the 2015-16 season, he became the Sagueneen’s team captain and went on to lead the entire QMJHL with 90 points over 63 games . An incredible feat for any hockey player, it was also a career high for Roy.  He was named to the QMJHL First All-Star Team that year as well.

Nicolas Roy signed a 3-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes, on entry-level contract status.  He was subsequently assigned to the Charlotte Checkers, the Canes’ AHL affiliate team, for the rest of the season.  He returned to Quebec once again to finish his junior career in the QMJHL, was named once again to the First All-Star Team and won the Guy Carbonneau Trophy.  He was also nominated for the Marcel Robert Trophy for best student-athlete in the QMJHL that same season.

Traded to VGK

After being traded to the Vegas Golden Knights in the summer of 2019, he attended training camp there and bonded with fellow French-speaking forward Jonathan Marchessault.  That season, Roy was shuffled between the VGK roster and the Chicago Wolves roster frequently, 30 times as a matter of fact.  On October 27th, Nicolas Roy scored his first NHL goal, which was the game-winning goal as well, in a 5-2 win against the Anaheim Ducks.  He eventually found himself spending more time on the ice with the Vegas Golden Knights and a more permanent spot on the NHL roster.

In the spring of that season, the Vegas Golden Knights offered Roy a two-year contract extension and Roy accepted. “When I was traded here, my goal was to earn another contract.  I want to try and help this team and I think I can.  It’s a great organization and we have a lot of great players.  This is a big day for me.,” Roy said.  He now has one year remaining on that contract as the Vegas Golden Knights begin their fifth season as an NHL team in September 2021.
